TEKERA DEMONSTRATION FARM, CO-OPERATIVE FARMING, & TEKERA COMMERCIAL FARM

SDG #1 NO POVERTY

Recognizing access to markets as the largest contributing factor to local farmers poor income generating potential – Tekera farmers co-operative connects farmers to income sources 

SDG #2 ZERO HUNGER

  1. Healthy staff and students thrive. The Tekera farm provides the food for the Tekera meal program offering nutritious and well rounded meals to the staff and students

 

SDG #3 GOOD HEALTH AND WELLBEING

The Tekera community is based in agriculture, recognition and support through this program is imperative. The demonstration farm offers skills in: growing a variety of crops, soil PH, crop rotation, climate smart agriculture. Growing more food for the family means less neo-natal deaths, health related issues and supports overall good health and wellbeing. 

SDG #4 QUALITY EDUCATION

  1. The demonstration farm offers new skills training like climate smart agriculture, water conservation techniques and soil health – allowing for healthier crops, healthier nutrition, and increased income. 

  2. The Tekera pig farm offers the community skills and information in livestock rearing and business 

  3. Students at TPS learn about agriculture through the demonstration farm 

SDG #6 CLEAN WATER AND SANITATION

  1. Through wells, rainwater harvesting and drip lines, Tekera increases water-use efficiency across all sectors of the farm and ensures sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater to address water scarcity 

  2. The Farm uses integrated water resources management techniques to reduce water waste 

 

SDG #7 AFFORDABLE AND CLEAN ENERGY 

  1. ​The farm is irrigated using underground water wells, harvest tanks and drip lines pumped up via solar water pumps into tanks – which offers the community a demonstration alternative water irrigation techniques while using green energy 

SDG #8 DECENT WORK AND ECONOMIC GROWTH

  1. The farm employs full time and part time staff, offering pay equity

  2. The farm promotes economic growth through the selling of produce, livestock and connecting farmers to markets 

  3. The farm also leases/buys surrounding land to grow crops, using land and labour that would otherwise be under utilized

 

SDG # 9 INDUSTRY, INNOVATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE 

  1. Supporting the farmers co-op significantly raise the agriculture industry’s share of employment and gross domestic product in the Tekera area

  2. The farm Increases the access of small-scale agriculture industry, including access to micro-credit, and integration into value chains and markets

SDG # SUSTAINABLE CITIES AND COMMUNITIES

  1. The farm provides income to Tekera through selling livestock and produce, helping make it self-sufficient.

  2. It provides food for our students and staff, reducing costs! 

  3. ​It provides information to the community on resource efficiency, mitigation and adaptation to climate change, and resilience to disasters (flooding and drought)

SDG #13 CLIMATE ACTION 

  1. The demonstration farm teaches techniques to try to mitigate against the effects of climate change – such as water management and crop covering

  2. The farm has switched to solar powered pumps vs. diesel 

  3. The demonstration farm provides information that builds human capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning for the agriculture community 

 

SDG #14 LIFE ON LAND

The demonstration farm teaches soil health, crop rotation, and crop biodiversity to help with agricultural ecosystem wellbeing

SDG #17 PARTNERSHIPS FOR THE GOALS​ 

Tekera partners with Ugandan based academic and professional institutions to help teach new skills in the demonstration farm. Partners have included the Uganda Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, Masaka Coffee Co-operative, Wambizzi Abattoir, District Agriculture office, and  Seeds of Peace
