Tekera Primary School & Tekera Vocational Trades School and the UN Sustainable Development Goals 

 

SDG #1 NO POVERTY

The UN says that education is the way to end poverty. We provide equal rights to economic resources that allow families basic access to services. Through our alternative financial systems, the school is universally accessible and accepts fee payment in: Ugandan Shillings, US or Canadian Dollars, Tekera pesos, work hours, goods or livestock! It also accepts seasonal school fee instalments from agriculture based families - understanding fseasonal needs of the community.  We want everyone to have access to quality eduction to help stop the cycle of poverty. 

SDG #2 ZERO HUNGER

At the school, Tekera offers a breakfast and lunch program. Boarding sections are fed three meals a day. Full bellies make for full brains! Some of this food comes from our own community farm! 

 

SDG #3 GOOD HEALTH AND WELL-BEING

Tekera is a certified early childhood education centre with the Ministry of Education. It provides activities such as soccer, netball, drumming, drama, dance and volleyball. Tekera also does bi-annual health checks on all student to ensure they are in a healthy state! 

 

SDG #4 QUALITY EDUCATION

Equitable and quality education is at the core of everything that Tekera does. In 2017, TPS jumped from 5th to 2nd in Masaka District. Tekera is a PLE certified exam centre, and all of the teachers are nationally certified professionals. 

 

SDG #5 GENDER EQUALITY 

Tekera understand barriers to education in the community. Tekera provides a girls dorm, with a sanitation and hygiene room.  Additionally, the scholarship program takes into account gender, ensuring girls are not discriminated against based on their sex or gender 

 

SDG #6 CLEAN WATER AND SANITATION 

The school has water tanks in each class room, bio-sand water filters, an a borehole well with pump - so water is available to all students, even in the dry season. Additionally, sanitation education is provided starting from baby class  

 

SDG #7 AFFORDABLE AND CLEAN ENERGY 

The school is powered by solar panels, offering a safe evening study space for all students  

 

SDG #8 DECENT WORK AND ECONOMIC GROWTH

  1. Tekera provides reliable, equitable pay and productive full time employment for staff

  2. Through vocational trades education Tekera provides skills and trades training to those students who are unable to attend secondary school. These trades will provide future labour productivity, economic growth, and decrease unemployment rates

 

SDG #9 INDUSTRY, INNOVATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE 

  1. Through the vocational trades school, Tekera supports the future growth of infrastructure and innovation by teaching trades in carpentry, masonry, and computer technology.  

  2. The school has been upgraded to make it more sustainable, including extending awnings to make the school more weather/climate resilient,  and the adoption of clean and environmentally sound technologies like solar

  3. Tekera has increased access to information and communication technology by putting in a computer lab. It also strives to provide universal and affordable access to the Internet to all staff 

 

SDG #10 REDUCED INEQUALITIES 

Tekera Primary empowers and promotes the social, economic and political inclusion of all, irrespective of age, sex, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion or economic or other status 

 

SDG #11 SAFE, SUSTAINABLE CITIES AND COMMUNITIES 

  1. We offer boarding dorms on site at Tekera vocational and primary schools to ensure that the students have safe and quality housing options while they study

  2. All buildings are created with climate in mind, powered by solar, and situated to maximize ambient heating and cooling

 

SDG #15 LIFE ON LAND

All students at Tekera Primary learn about agriculture, environmental stewardship, and biodiversity - learning how to integrate ecosystem and biodiversity values into local planning

 

SDG #16 PEACE, JUSTICE, AND STRONG INSTITUTIONS

Through a school lead initiative, students promote cooperation, community, volunteerism, and learn healthy debate skills to help mitigate conflict and unrest.  Tekera values human rights, inclusivity, and individuality. 

 

SDG #17 PARTNERSHIPS FOR THE GOALS 

We partner with a number of private and government supported Ugandan educational partners to strengthen our access to books, educational training for students and teachers, and infrastructure development
